Paintings | Aurora (2014-17)
A selection of paintings of the Aurora Borealis made in response to Nick’s experiences of the Northern Lights in the Arctic skies above Finnish Lapland.
"The aurora is notoriously difficult to capture on canvas. It is so wide and changing. It can be so subtle at times and then so suddenly flaring and alive with movement and colour. And the photographs that we take cement unrealistic memories. As well as some of the wondrous moments—such as Dream: Auroral Corona—Nicholas Jones’ pictures capture some of the subtlety and delicacy of the aurora, and evoke the experience of being there and witnessing the aurora in the landscape. There, the sight of even gentle, slow aurora can engender gratitude and peace, and many of Nicholas Jones’ paintings capture this spirit.”
